It’s medicare hospice coverage FAQ that keep people on websites like this one. Knowledge of frequently asked questions like does medicare cover hospice care is what hundreds seek on a weekly basis.

To answer that question I will tell you that the beneficiaries are eligible for the benefits if they are

Seeing a physician and the hospice medical director declares that as a patient you are terminally ill and have less than 6 months to live.

If you are receiving care from a medicare approved hospice program in your area.

If you are eligible for Medicare Part A (Hospice Insurance)

Or if a beneficiary signs an official statement selecting hospice care rather than routine Medicare covered benefits for a terminal illness. The revocation of Medicare coverage applies only to palliative care services for the terminal condition; therefore, any services that are not related to the terminal illness should continue to be billed as usual.

Something else to kow is that room and board will not be covered by Medicare if the patient is getting care from their home. Same rule applies for nursing homes and hospice residential facilities. In certain cases depending on the level of services provided, the costs for room and board are included in Medicare’s payment (for example, when a hospice patient is admitted to a hospital or respite level of care).

Here is what’s covered for your personal knowledge:

Services covered are-

Doctor services

Nursing care

Medical equipment (i.e. wheelchairs or walkers)

Medical supplies (i.e. bandages and catheters

drugs for symptom control and pain relief

Short-term care in hospital, including respite care

Home health aide and homemaker services

Physical and occupational therapy

Speech therapy

Hospice providers also provide spiritual counseling services and social work services. Many have volunteers who have been through loss recently and can provide support for both patient and family. Most also offer grief counseling services for families.
